In 2014, 6 days before I turned 25, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Two years later, in March 2016, I took my last dose of chemotherapy.
In 2019, 6 days before her SECOND birthday, Gracie received the same diagnosis. Two years later, in January 2022, Gracie received her last dose of chemotherapy.
The 25 months in between those two dates – diagnosis and “last dose” – is a long road. It’s hard, and painful and scary and daunting. It changes your life and those in your inner circle’s lives forever. But at the end of the day, we both got a happy ending.
This year, Team Neuk the Leuk is walking in celebration of a beautiful young life (and her family’s) that’s been restored.
We are walking in celebration of my baby girl, Cora Rose, who came into this world November 6, 2021, who wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the people at Dana-Farber.
We are walking in celebration of the research that came PRIOR to Gracie and I’s diagnosis’s that allowed for our remissions. That allowed for us and our family’s to have a future. It is because of the funds that were raised and the research that was done with those dollars that drove science to discover a cure for the exact type of leukemia we had.
Not everyone today gets that same path we took that ended with a restored life.
So we celebrate – the progress that has been made and the blessings our families have received – but we FIGHT for those who do not have the cure yet. We FIGHT for all the 25 year olds, and 2 year olds and 15 year olds, and 80 year olds and all those in between that get a diagnosis but don’t get a path to cure.
Team “Neuk the Leuk,” is based off a phrase I used quite often as motivation while in treatment. The funds our team raises specifically go towards the ground-breaking research that my oncologist, Dr. Daniel DeAngelo, and his team are conducting to find cures for the many kinds of blood cancers that are currently without successful treatment plans. Only 61% of patients diagnosed with leukemia survive 5 years past diagnosis. That number needs to get to 100% survival—and your donation can help. Every dollar donated to our team will go directly towards the research needed to close that gap. Our goal is to support the incredible science that Dr. D and his team do everyday to find a cure so we can ‘Neuk the Leuk’ forever.
JOIN US! Every dollar counts and every person who walks lifts up this community in hope, which is really what everyone deserves!
All my love & light,
