I am participating in the 2022 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.
This half-marathon walk combines so many important memories in my life; I couldn't picture a better event for me to participate in to give back.
As many of you know, my dad passed away in 2011 after a very short battle with lung cancer. First and foremost, this walk is in his honor and memory. I know he will be walking right along with me.
Second, my grandfather was an avid supporter of the Jimmy Fund throughout his life, and it all paid off when he bought a $1 ticket from Burger King and won a brand new car from the Jimmy Fund! I've continued his Jimmy Fund support, and this just adds another way to do so.
The team I'm walking with, Trustees Trekkers, is a group of individuals who regularly hike/walk/explore the Trustees of Reservations properties throughout MA. These properties were instrumental in maintaining my mental health throughout the COVID pandemic. The properties are all beautiful and unique in their own ways. Jack, Joe, and the rest of our close family bubble visit the properties and go for hikes at least once a week (at least we try to). Getting out in nature on these amazing properties has been my saving grace when the world around me has become a bit more challenging!
Lastly, I've been going to watch the Boston Marathon since I was in college at Northeastern. Every year I watch, clap, and cry at the pure strength and courage that all of the runners display as they run, walk, crawl across the finish line. In 2013, my friends and I were about three blocks away from where the bombings took place. The happiest day of the year immediately changed into one of the worst days we'd experienced. Every year, I watch the race in awe of those who returned after 2013, those who started after 2013, and every single person that starts the race. While I'm not running a full marathon (running has never been my thing!), I'm hopeful that walking half of the route these inspirational people run will allow me to give a piece of myself to the Marathon's incredible history.
When you make a gift to my Walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge research and compassionate patient care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
Thank you for supporting my Jimmy Fund Walk fundraising efforts. Together, we can defy cancer!
